Vietnam's Economic Press Marks Key Anniversaries, Eyes AI-Driven Future

Vietnam’s media sector is marking two significant milestones this month, celebrating the 101st anniversary of the country's revolutionary journalism on June 21 while leading economic publication Tap chi Kinh te Viet Nam / Vietnam Economic Times / VnEconomy commemorates 35 years of operation. The anniversaries provide a moment for the industry to reflect on its historical role and its future trajectory in an era of rapid technological change.
The history of journalism in Vietnam has been closely linked with the nation's development. The press has traditionally served not only to document and reflect events but also to analyze and interpret them, with a stated mission to “record history” while raising public awareness and encouraging participation in national movements initiated by the Party. Party General Secretary and State President To Lam recently affirmed this role, stating: “The press has done a great job in propagating and widely disseminating the Party’s major policies and orientations regarding the ‘New Era,’ in the streamlining of the political system, and in the efforts and determination to address ‘bottlenecks’ hindering the country’s development. These contributions are not only the result of creative labor but also a testament to the courage, intellect, and social responsibility of the journalism community in fulfilling its historic mission.”
Over its 35-year history, VnEconomy has positioned itself as a key bridge between domestic and foreign enterprises and the public, aiming to foster a deeper mutual understanding of market needs. The organization reports significant progress in its circulation, information content, readership, and the application of new technologies.
A critical component of its outreach to the international investment community has been the Vietnam Economic Times, its English-language edition, which launched on March 15, 1994. An online version followed on November 11, 2014, further expanding its digital footprint. This platform has become an important resource for the business community, particularly for foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprises seeking essential economic information and analysis.
In a statement marking the occasion, Dr. Chu Van Lam, Chairman of the Editorial Board, noted that a special double edition would address the contemporary challenges facing the industry. The report focuses on the position and role of the press in the AI era, emphasizing journalism’s functions of social monitoring and criticism. It also highlights the need for innovation, digital transformation, and mastering new technologies to better serve policymakers, research centers, management agencies, and the business community in the digital era.
