Vietnam Leads ASEAN in AI-Ready Workforce, Microsoft Study Reveals

Vietnam’s workforce is among the most prepared in Southeast Asia to adopt artificial intelligence, but a fundamental redesign of business operating models is required to convert this advantage into productivity and competitive gains. The findings come from Microsoft Vietnam’s Work Trend Index 2026 report, released on June 24.
The report, which analyzed trillions of anonymized productivity signals from Microsoft 365 and surveyed 2,000 knowledge workers in Vietnam, indicates the nation is rapidly advancing into the AI era. Vietnam now ranks first in ASEAN for its proportion of “AI pioneers,” with 39% of workers identified as advanced users—more than double the global average of 16%.
AI pioneers are defined as employees who have deeply integrated the technology into their daily workflows. They apply AI not just to routine tasks but to higher-value activities such as information analysis, complex problem-solving, evaluating options, and generating innovative ideas.
The study also suggests that Vietnamese workers view AI as a collaborative tool rather than a replacement for human intellect. A significant 89% of AI users in the country reported using AI-generated output as a starting point for further analysis, not as a final product. This approach keeps critical judgment, evaluation, and accountability with human decision-makers.
The performance impact is already significant. According to the report, 76% of Vietnamese AI users are achieving work outcomes that would have been impossible for them a year prior. Among the cohort of AI pioneers, this figure increases to 83%.
While these results underscore Vietnam’s strength in AI-enabled talent, Microsoft cautioned that workforce capability alone is insufficient. To secure sustainable competitive advantages, businesses must now implement new organizational structures, operating processes, and governance models designed to fully leverage AI-driven transformation.
