UOB deepens Vietnam commitment with $450m Ho Chi Minh City headquarters

United Overseas Bank (UOB) has commenced construction on a new $450 million headquarters in Ho Chi Minh City, a major investment that establishes it as the first foreign bank to develop and own a purpose-built tower within the city’s planned international financial centre. The groundbreaking ceremony in early July for UOB Plaza Ho Chi Minh City signals the bank's growing confidence in Vietnam, which it considers one of its most important markets in the ASEAN region.
According to Victor Ngo, CEO of UOB Vietnam, the new headquarters will significantly enhance the bank's capacity to serve clients engaged in cross-border business and investment, while solidifying its long-term presence in the country.
A Strategic Anchor in Vietnam's Financial Hub
Located at No. 2 Ton Duc Thang Street in the Ba Son precinct, the 36-storey Grade A office tower is set to rise 160 metres above the Saigon River. Its development marks a key milestone for Vietnam’s financial sector, positioning UOB as the inaugural foreign bank to build and own its headquarters within the Vietnam International Financial Centre in Ho Chi Minh City (VIFC-HCMC).
The project underscores UOB's strategy to support Vietnam’s increasing integration into regional and global capital, trade, and investment networks. Upon completion, UOB will have established its full headquarters footprint across its five core ASEAN markets: Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam, thereby reinforcing its regional network.
Mr. Ngo emphasised that the new headquarters is more than a real estate investment. “It is a strategic commitment to participate in and contribute to the next phase of Vietnam’s financial and economic development,” he stated. “By positioning ourselves within this emerging ecosystem from the outset, we can better support our clients, deepen our engagement with the market, and play a more active role in connecting Vietnam with regional and international opportunities.”
The decision also reflects the bank’s confidence in Ho Chi Minh City’s trajectory. UOB intends to establish a branch within the VIFC-HCMC and plans to work closely with government agencies and industry partners to support the centre's growth into an internationally connected financial hub. “We believe the city has the foundations, ambition and momentum to become one of Asia’s most dynamic financial gateways, and we are committed to being part of that journey in the coming times,” Mr. Ngo said.
Fostering Innovation and Collaboration
Beyond its strategic location, the new headquarters is designed to reflect the evolution of modern financial institutions. Mr. Ngo explained that the building’s design is centered on people, with an equal focus on employee well-being, collaboration, and innovation.
Features such as flexible workspaces, open layouts, and shared areas are intended to encourage interaction across different teams. The design also incorporates abundant natural light, greenery, and views of the Saigon River to create a healthier and more inspiring work environment.
Its position within the VIFC-HCMC provides further advantages, placing UOB within a broader ecosystem of leading financial institutions and a vibrant urban environment. This proximity is expected to create new opportunities for collaboration and innovation. “The architecture and interior layout have been carefully planned to encourage interaction and seamless movement throughout the workplace,” Mr. Ngo noted. He elaborated that every aspect, from the building’s interior to its surrounding public spaces, has been designed to facilitate engagement and effective teamwork.
“The headquarters aims to foster a workplace where employees feel connected, inspired and proud to be part of UOB Vietnam,” he added.
Looking ahead, Mr. Ngo believes the building will transcend its function as an office to become a lasting symbol of the bank's deep-rooted presence in Vietnam. “Ultimately, we hope the new headquarters will not only serve as a workplace but also become a landmark that reflects UOB’s long-term commitment to Vietnam,” he concluded. “Positioned within Ho Chi Minh City’s evolving financial district, we believe it will become one of the city’s iconic buildings and a source of pride for our employees, customers and the wider community.”
